David Zink Yi zeigt bei Johann König erstmals eine skulpturale Installation. Auf dem Boden der Galerie liegen riesige Arme eines Keramik- Tintenfisches. Obwohl David Zink Yi bisher vor allem Videoinstallationen produziert hat, steht die Materialität der Keramikskulpturen in enger Verbindung zu weiteren Arbeiten und deren Thematiken. So ist zum Beispiel das verwendete Material bei Zink Yi zum wiederholten Mal im Sinne des kollektiven Gedächtnisses eingesetzt: Auch in der Videoinstallation „El Festejo“ (2000) werden Porzellanfiguren zu übergroßen (familiären) Erinnerungsträgern. Die Aneignung des Fremden, im den Videoarbeiten repräsentiert durch die Einflüsse geografisch weit entfernter, fremder Kulturen, wird hier zur Aneignung des biologisch Fremden – dem Meerestier.
For the first time, David Zink Yi shows a sculptural installation. Eight huge arms of an octopus rest on the floor of the gallery. Although David Zink Yi has particularly produced video installations so far, this seemingly new orientation towards materiality is closely related to further works and their subject matters. The used material by Zink Yi for instance is repeatedly employed in the sense of the collective memory: also in the video installation “El Festejo” (2000), figures made of porcelain become unnaturally big familiar reminder. The adoption of the peregrine- represented by the influences of geographically distant, foreign cultures- here becomes the appropriation of the biologically exotic – the oceanic animal.
