Jordan Wolfson Sat 27. Jan 2007 - Sat 03. Mar 2007 Press Release Dear Visitor, This is my first exhibition with the gallery and also my first solo show in Germany. The show consists of six works: a light switch, a drawing, a photograph, a 16-mm film, a telescope and an undisclosed work installed outside of the gallery. The light switch 27th floor (1931-2007) operates the lights in the entire exhibition space (feel free to switch it on and off as you please). The switch comes from the Empire State Building. I received the switch from Bill Tortorelli, who is the building's chief electrician. Mr. Tortorelli explained to me that the switch is 76 years old and was part of the Empire State Buildings original electrical installation. The day I went to pick up the switch, Mr. Tortorelli also told me about a screenplay he had written about a man who is the chief electrician at Empire State Building: as the result of a chain of events, the protagonist quits his job to achieve greater success. Throughout his quest, the man's life becomes complicated and divided, causing him to long for the simple life he once had working at the Empire State Building, which he is reminded of by the ever-present silhouette of the building against the New York skyline. Instructions for Returning (2006) is an unfinished text describing basic instructions for returning to civilization if lost in the wilderness. The photograph Helen Keller, 2007 is a re-photographed photograph of Helen Keller. Forest from Above in Reverse, 2007 is a 16-mm film of a forest from an elevated perspective receding slowly. The image in the film will soon be immersed in the color black. Clairvoyant, 2007 is a photograph of my cat Charlie. The telescope accompanied by shelf of binders is titled 100 Years of the Moon, 2007. The telescope is equipped with controls that allow you to input two separate coordinates —"Right ascension (R.A.)" and "Declination (Dec.)"— to find a position in the night sky. The binders contain the coordinates for finding the moon from the location of the gallery at every hour for one hundred years beginning from the opening date of this exhibition. Goodbye, Jordan Wolfson Liebe Besucher, dies ist meine erste Einzelausstellung in der Galerie, und auch meine erste Einzelausstellung in Deutschland. Die Ausstellung besteht aus sechs Arbeiten: ein Lichtschalter, eine Zeichnung, ein 16mm-Film, ein Fernrohr und zwei Fotografien. Der Lichtschalter ist an der ersten Wand angebracht, gleich links, wenn Sie die Galerie betreten und mit ihm kann die gesamte Ausstellung ein- und ausgeschaltet werden. Der Schalter entstammt dem Stromsystem des Empire State Buildings. Als ich den Schalter abholte, erklärte mir der 76jährige Elektromeister des Empire State Buildings, Mr. Tortorelli, dass er ein Drehbuch geschrieben hätte. Es erzählt die Geschichte eines Elektromeisters des Empire State Buildings, der seinen Job aufgibt um auf anderen Wegen zu mehr Erfolg zu gelangen. Durch seine neuen Bestrebungen wird sein Leben immer komplizierter. Die Silhouette des Empire State Buildings am Himmel von New York erinnert ihn fortan an die Einfachheit, die er zuvor genießen konnte. Neben dem Lichtschalter ist die Zeichnung, Instructions for returning, 2006. Der fragmentarische Text gibt grundlegende Anweisungen im Falle einer Rückkehr in die Zivilisation nach dem man sich in der Wildnis verirrt hatte. Das Foto ist ein abfotografiertes Foto von Helen Keller. Der 16mm-Film heißt Forest from Above in Reverse [Wald von oben rückwärts] (2007). Es ist eine kleine, direkt auf die Wand projizierte Arbeit, die aus einer erhöhten Perspektive einen Wald zeigt, der langsam zurückweicht. Das Bild in diesem Film wird bald in die Farbe schwarz eingetaucht. Clairvoyant, 2007 ist eine Fotografie meiner Katze Charlie. Das Fernrohr, zusammen mit dem Stapel Ordner, trägt den Titel 100 Years of the Moon [Hundert Jahre des Monds] (2007). Es ist so ausgerüstet, dass Sie zwei unterschiedliche Koordinaten eingeben können – “right ascension” [rechter Aufgang] und “declination” [Untergang] – um eine Position am Nachthimmel zu finden. Die Ordner enthalten die Koordinaten, mit deren Hilfe ab dem Eröffnungstag dieser Ausstellung der Mond von der Galerie aus zu jeder Stunde hundert Jahre lang gefunden werden kann.
