Liegende (Installation view) - 2007
wood, stain, metal chain
The title "Liegenden" (lying figures) refers to the traditional portrayal of figures in the reclining position, such as the "Pieta" and "Dornenzieher." The figures in "Liegende" are solitary, yet united in composition. Each work consists of a wooden board held loosely upright by a chain. This construction is repeated in different incarnations, through various weights, balances, and the visible tension of falling. Each wooden board is stained in black without any further finish on the surface, thus making it dull and highly light-absorbing. The objects come close to losing their three-dimensionality and appearing as a drawing of a movement frozen in space.
