Presumably since the 18th century quartetto tables or nesting tables are known in England. In the early 20th century the Wiener Werkstätte and later on the Bauhaus extensively explored the design of nesting tables. The grey jersey tabletop covering of "Quartetto Amerika" and also the work title pick up on a phenomena spotted in the Bauhaus design, whereby the preoccupation with folk art and handicraft traditions are correlated with national and ethnical attribution. An explicit example is the "Afrikanische Stuhl" [African chair] (1921) by Marcel Breuer and Gunta Stölzl. By using cotton jersey as a material developed in the U.S.A. and popular as "casual sportswear" the piece of furniture arbitrarily alters a american version of nesting table.
