Chizhevsky Lessons - 2007
copper plates, steel wire, cascade generator, transformer, voltmeter
Exhibition View: Micol Assael, Chizhevsky Lessons, Kunsthalle Basel, 2007.
Photo: Serge Hasenböhler
The installation was made within the framework of Micol Assaël's solo show in the Kunsthalle Basel. Square copperplates, connected to generators, were hanging from the ceiling and turned the 200m² hall of the Kunsthalle into a giant electrical condenser. As a result, every visitor who would enter the space would be electrified and could feel a current flow through the body. If a person or object with the opposite electrical charge was touched, a discharge would occur, accompanied by a blue spark.
The title refers to the Russian scientist Chizhevky (1897-1964), who did research on the connection between the activity of the sun and historical events like wars and revolutions. He experimented with the effect of ionized air on living creatures and became famous as one of the pioneers in space biology.
For her project, Micol Assaël worked together with the scientific institute of Moscow.
