Mirror Angle with Lamellae - 2006
stainless steel, mirror
230 x 93,1 x 93,1 cm / 90 1/2 x 36 3/4 x 36 3/4 in
Two rectangular mirrors are connected to each other at a 90° angle to form a corner mirror. One side consists of a smooth surface and the other is made of mirrored lamellae mounted at equal distances apart. Whereas the mirrors simply reflect the opposite space and the visitors when viewed from the side, an interesting optical phenomenon occurs when the mirror corner is viewed from the front. The right angle causes a double reflection, as each of the two mirrors reflect not only the location but also the other mirror. Their widths become extended, seeming to continue on the other respective side, hence appearing to the viewer as a mirrored cross, rather than a mirrored corner. In addition, views through the slots between lamellae alternate with the mirror images, so that a lattice-like structure of fragmented real and reflected space emerges. Outlines, angles and corners switch to give the viewer an ambiguous sense of space.
