Dedicated to Yi Yen Wu (video stills) - 2000

one-channel video installation
23 min 30

In the video "Dedicated to Yi Yen Wu" (2000), three people relate their diverse ethnic origins and cultural landscapes, as well as their traditions and experiences that cross national borders.
They tell their stories in a kitchen, as their accounts start from their cooking traditions (African-Peruvian, Italian, Chinese) The stories and respective cuisine cultures are related visually through the composition of the video image as an open cook book. The sensuality of the images on the left complements the scarcity of the texts on the right, which contain the English subtitles to the spoken Spanish.
The alignment of stories structures the video into three sequences. These are irregularly interrupted by brief introductions of portraits. Individual faces appear presenting themselves by telling their names, in contrast to the story-telling voices, whose faces cannot be seen throughout the video. The voices evoke an image shaped by their words, expressing thoughts on distant, yet familiar landscapes. The video tells the story of the ever present and determined longing for "elsewhere".
