El Festejo - 2001 two-channel video installation 30 x 20 x 15 cm / 11 3/4 x 7 3/4 x 6 in 9 min Installation view: Frieze Art Fair, London, 2005. The video "El festejo" sketches a portrait. The Leitmotif and structuring element is an African-Peruvian rhythm, which stands for interrelations. The Festejo, a syncopated rhythm, is played with two instruments. The cajon gives the base rhythm, whose intervals are entered by the bongos, finding their own statement. The dialectical structure of the festejo brings together two differnt stories, experiences of two different persons: A mulatto woman´s account of her experiences with the Chinese and memories of her Chinese ancestors and an overseas Chinese descendent tell us about his experience with the Chinese and about Chinese drumming. While both appear in fragments and images of a Chinese domestic interior are showed to us, the two-track rhythms overlap the images generating moments of constant redefinition.
