Die Krankheiten des Uhus und ihre Bedeutung für die Wiedereinbürgerung in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland - 2003
[The horned owl’s diseases and their significance for its renaturalisation in the Federal Republic of Germany]
sound installation, newspaper
Format variable
Installation view: 10.Sonar Festival, Barcelona, 2003.
On entering the art gallery, a sound is "attached" to the visitor: apparently the sound of a fluttering bird now trapped in the room looking for an exit. The moving sound does not coincide with the visitor's movements, but circles the room aimlessly, increasingly panic-stricken, and crashes into the windowpanes now and again. It stops as soon as the visitor leaves the gallery. Whenever a new visitor enters, another bird is triggered. So if there are 30 people in the room, there will be - in all probability - a massive sound movement that can only be influenced by people leaving the room. The doors of the gallery are equipped with sensors that start and stop the sounds. The sound which was produced by a Foley operator and digitally enhanced is distributed through a PA system with eight speakers controlled by a software patch. Apart from the speakers, the room is empty. On their way out visitors can take a free newspaper that contains various materials.
